If you're a registered psychologist planning to be in practice
for
the next
10 years, be prepared…
The most dramatic changes to the way you deliver psychology services are not far away.
The future is already here.
Rapidly evolving internet technologies, social media and the rise of global competition has changed the way we live and do business in a manner that was almost unimaginable less than a decade ago.
Significant changes that were not expected to occur for at least the next three to five years are already in play. For the modern-day psychology practitioner, the "future" is already here. More dramatic developments are not far away.
Whilst it is increasingly clear that the vast majority of psychology practitioners lack several of the most basic forms of training and preparation for surviving and adapting to what is quickly becoming a rapid change, global therapy environment, the need for psychology practitioners to develop innovative, technical and managerial mind-sets will become increasingly greater over time.
Five critical challenges every psychology practitioner needs to prepare for
and adapt to:
Online psychology is now being practiced right around the world.
The delivery of online psychological services already crosses state borders. It is only a matter of time before every psychologist will be required to compete not only against local highly skilled and qualified specialists, but also unlicensed and unqualified therapists from overseas, free to make unethical claims and able to take advantage of regulation-free cyber borders.
Old governments will giveth and new governments will taketh away.
Domestically, numerous government agencies are contemplating ways of reducing spending in all areas. Only the most naive of optimists can expect existing support for mental health services to be immune from further tightening. If the Medicare rebate was to become means tested, many psychologists will be forced to either further reducing service fees, or closing their practices.
Patients are becoming more litigious.
Following on from developments overseas, psychologists are being subjected to increasing levels of professional responsibility, regulation and legal threat. Not only are practitioners (and their families) more at risk from patients, but also from various government agencies, insurance companies and taxation authorities.
Meanwhile, too many of their accountants remain blissfully unaware of psychology practice risk. The result: nothing gets done until after it is too late.
The generalist model of practice is under major threat.
We have seen many referral sources being conditioned into treating generalist psychologists as homogenous bulk billing commodities. At the same time, more patients are becoming educated towards seeking specialist mental health services that can be accessed more conveniently, in less time, and for less cost.
Double Jeopardy: The perils of incorrectly commissioning contractors and employees.
Practice owners will often face new and difficult challenges as they attempt to grow through the employment of other psychology professionals. Here are some sobering facts:
- The vast majority of psychology practices that employ contractors do so in an incorrect commercial form. These practices are at serious risk of fines and penalty interest equal to or greater than 50% of all amounts that have been paid both now and in the past. Calculate how much you have paid contractors over the past three years. Multiply that figure by 50%. If your agreement with contractors has not been correctly structured, this is what is at risk.
- A failure to generate sufficient levels of chargeable work for psychologists within a practice will lead most practitioners towards having to work more to earn less, in order to subsidise earning shortfalls.
Translation: Work like crazy. Make less money.
- The majority of practice owners that employ either contractors and/or employees have no systems in place for measuring practitioner performance, client retention or treatment success.
- The average practice owner struggles to take home a wage that adequately rewards them for all of their training, hard work, and the risks associated with having a business.
But with challenge and threat comes opportunity...
Presenting Psychology Practice 3.0.
The most content rich two day practice development intensive you will ever attend.
An alternate vision of a practice that could be yours is at hand…
The message for all psychology practitioners is clear. Future practice success will be dependent upon the delicate interplay of professional services with employee development, prudent and skilled financial management, and the need to develop active referral networks. They will need to employ strategies that will bring out the best in their teams or risk having their people cost them everything.
To succeed, all practitioners will need to learn how to embrace technology and innovation, and be ready to adjust to the new online competitive environment; or find themselves forced out by those that do. They will have to become skilled at running a practice whilst applying a business mind-set, or alternatively learn how to cope with much less than they have now.
To succeed in business, the practitioner and practice must evolve to 3.0.
The Practice3.0 intensive will provide you with the most critical practice management development training of your career. |

Session 1:
Future Directions for Psychology Practice Development.
What it will take to make your psychology practice 'Practice 3.0'?
The Practice 3.0 practitioner embraces change and will always be on the hunt for opportunity. They develop a culture within their practices that embraces advances in technology. They keep pace with improvements to psychological interventions. They employ systems that allow their people to readily adapt to the challenges of a rapidly evolving, global social environment.
In this first session, we will:
- Reveal those specific tangible elements used to define a Practice 3.0 practice.
- Show you how simple modifications to psychology practice systems can allow you to take advantage of opportunities being offered in the digital age.
- Teach you how to identify and protect your practice against internal and external challenges and threats.
- Explain the critical role technology is playing in the development of Practice 3.0 operations.
|
|
Session 2:
The APS Professional Practice Management Standards.
The APS Professional Practice Management Standards are intended to help enhance members' levels of professionalism, and to promote high quality professional practices.
The standards are wide-ranging and cover such areas as professional risk management as well as the promotion of "good business management and staff employment practices".
Whilst currently advisory in nature, sources within the APS have advised that it is likely the time will come when the profession decides to make these compliance standards mandatory for all psychology practices. In this session, we will review several of the main standards and provide systems aimed at getting your practice compliant; both now and in the future.
|
|
Session 3:
Essential Skills of the Practice 3.0 Practitioner.
Practice success is often dependent upon the delicate interplay of professional services with employee development, prudent and skilled financial management, and the need to develop active referral networks.
The focus of the 3.0 practitioner is on building a practice that inspires and delivers for its clients, its employees, their referral sources and of course, for themselves.
The primary question that Practice 3.0 owners frequently consider is, "What is the one thing that currently is impossible to do, but if you could do it, would transform the psychology experience for all that come into contact with it?".
In this session, we will:
- Examine the role and psychological mind-set of Practice 3.0 owners.
- Show you, step by step how to build a practice based on innovation principles.
- Teach you how to establish a 3.0 culture within your organisation.
- Explain how you recruit employees that share your values towards excellence in patient care.
|
|
Sessions 4 & 5:
The Practice 3.0 Psychology Manager: Part 1.
Management failures are frequently the source of many practice problems.
Above all, the failure to hold specific individuals personally accountable for predetermined results is often found to be the greatest reason for all practice failures.
Up until now however, there has been a paucity of practical management education directed at training practitioners in the art and science of management and employee development.
The Practice 3.0 intensive will go a long way towards actively addressing the psychology practice management education vacuum. Practice 3.0 management systems are easy to follow and quick to implement.
Furthermore they have been designed to allow you to concentrate your intelligence and abilities on a few key activities, which in turn will enable you to accomplish much more that the average practitioner can, and in far less time. |
|

|
|
 |
Session 4 & 5:
The Practice 3.0 Psychology Manager: Part 2.
In this second part of Sessions 4 & 5, you will continue to learn the essential skills of Practice 3.0 management. This session focuses on applying a systems approach towards managing your practice and developing your people. This includes how to:
- Deliver on the vision of the Practice 3.0 owner and grow the business.
- Create and enforce systems that encompass every element of practice operations (client service delivery, marketing and referral development, and finance).
- Construct practitioner development enterprise contracts.
- Develop, mentor and monitor the performances of employees.
- Design and implement employee performance measurement systems.
- Create marketing systems for developing employee-directed referrals.
|
|
Session 6:
Practice 3.0 Finance.
Fact: When it comes to improving the financial performance of a practice, the majority of taxation accountants usually are of little help. Even though some may know plenty about tax, few accountants know anything about running a psychology practice.
Despite often being the prevailing source of business advice to psychology practitioners, the overwhelming majority of accountants have little or no understanding as to the mechanics and risks associated with running a psychology practice.
Practitioners often find themselves hopelessly lost in a sea of meaningless figures, feigning an understanding as to the financial wellbeing of their businesses. The good news is that you don't need years of accountancy training in order to take control of your practice's finances.
In this session, we will teach you step by step how to:
- Tell the difference between excellent, good and ordinary financial advisers.
- Ask for information that is useful to you in making business decisions.
- Read and interpret your own financial reports.
- Identify ways of quickly improving the financial performance of your practice.
- Go from loss to profit in less than a quarter.
Better still, we will teach you how to apply this knowledge towards establishing strategies for improved service delivery and profit growth.
As a special offer to APS attendees, each will be invited to bring their latest financial statements to the intensive for confidential, one-on-one analysis with Patrick Lumbroso.

|
Session 7:
Practice 3.0 Protective Legal Structures.
Many practices are exposing their owners to substantial risks that are not covered by traditional business insurances. (This includes professional indemnity and general business insurance policies.) Remarkably, such risks can often be minimised quickly and at minimal expense.
In this session, you will learn:
- Why and how most practice structures are placing practice owners
(and families) at substantial risk.
- Risks to personal welfare not covered by professional indemnity insurance.
- Taxation flexibility.
- Expanding your business through contractors. Strategies for minimising risk and maximising returns
|
|
Session 8:
How to successfully build, manage and market your online e-psychology practice. Practice steps for taking your practice online. .
Online psychology services are no longer a "thing of the future".
For those willing to embrace internet technology and to implement some basic systems, online psychology can provide your practice with growth and the opportunity to help patients in need that often are incapable of accessing traditional psychology services.
In this session, you will learn:
- The basic four steps towards taking your practice online.
- Online psychology resources that are reliable, inexpensive and readily available.
- Software and equipment selection and implementation.
- Key target markets for promotion.
- Advantages and limitations: Where online psychology will and won't work.
- Options for service delivery. Face to face versus audio only.
- Legal and ethical considerations.
- Systems for setting online fees and getting paid.
|
|
Session 9:
Practice Management Supervision.
Each week, scores of practitioners will seek business and practice development advice from clinical supervisors. Whilst their insights into clinical issues are often extremely valuable, when it comes to business, it is frequently a case of the blind leading the visually impaired.
Each week in our consulting sessions with practitioners, we repeatedly hear stories of psychologists being misled and misinformed by "old school" supervisors that continue to pursue tired and out-dated practices. What is clear is that some of these supervisors have failed to keep pace with developments to PBA and APS practice management standards and ethical guidelines.
Technological advances capable of aiding patients and practitioners alike are too often dismissed without serious consideration or labeled "not ethical". Subjective opinions are often presented as objective facts. Often when challenged for factual detail, they default to the defensive instantly dismissing innovation and ideas as being not permissible or that "It won't work".
In this session, you will learn how to:
- Identify your practice development priorities.
- Find, interview, work with a practice management supervisor.
- Objectively measure and assess practice management development results.

This was followed up in 2012 with the production of the PsychNiche® Advanced+ Practice Development Intensive aimed at providing enterprise-focused practitioners with practical systems and tools for simultaneously developing practices that provide quality services, opportunities for personal and professional development, and financial reward.
